A history of Brend Hotels

Brend Hotels is a family run business; with over 50 years experience in catering and hospitality. For generations the Brend family have been looking after you and your families. Over the decades, the Brend Group has built up a portfolio of hotels, restaurants, petrol stations, cafes, a garage which all started with a butcher's shop.

 

1920’s 
Percy Brend opened butchers in Butchers Row, Barnstaple.

1955
Mr & Mrs Percy Brend purchase The Exeter Motel.

1965 
The Exeter Motel was sold to Bass Charrington. 

Richard Brend Snr. was operating an extensive retail and wholesale butchers' business in Plymouth and North Devon.

1968
John Brend opens the Fryary Restaurant, Barnstaple. Taw Garages is purchased with Richard Brend Snr taking overall control of these businesses.

1969 
The Royal Hotel, Bideford, is purchased. Percy R Brend & Sons (Hoteliers) company is formed.

1970
The North Devon Motel, Barnstaple is opened.

1971 
The Royal & Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple is purchased from Watney Mann.

1974 
The North Devon Leisure Centre bar and cafeteria is opened.

Peter Brend Snr. Joins as Group Director, responsible for Saunton Sands Hotel.

1975
The Devon Motel, Matford Exeter, is purchased, from Grand Metropolitan Hotels. Five restaurants are purchased from the Milk Marketing board. Three were sold in the same year; the Swansea and Exeter Milkmaid restaurants continued to trade.

1977 
The Royal Duchy Hotel, Falmouth, is purchased.

Saunton Sands Hotel, Saunton,is purchased after several years of negotiation, Mr Percy Brend achieves one of his ambitions.

1980
The Victoria Hotel, Sidmouth is purchased.

1981 
John Brend launches Brend Tours.

1982
The Carlyon Bay Hotel & Golf Course is purchased.

1984
The Swansea Milkmaid is sold.

1985
New Petrol Service Station is opened.

1986 
The Carlyon Bay Hotel & Golf Course achieves a 4 star status.

1987
The Belmont Hotel, Sidmouth is purchased.

1988
Saunton Beach Villas leased from Christie Estates.

The Belmont Hotel achieves a 4 star status. The North Devon Motel is extended by purchasing Drake and Fortescue Houses.

1989
The Royal Hotel, Bideford, is refurbished. The North Devon Motel is refurbished and renamed as The Park Hotel

Justin Brend joins the group at Taw Garages.

1991 
The Royal & Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple, is refurbished.

1992 
The Barnstaple Motel is purchased and refurbished, a 3 star status is achieved  and the name is changed to The Barnstaple Hotel

1993
‘Investors in People’ status is gained by the Hotel Group.

1995 
The Royal Duchy Hotel, Falmouth achieves a 4 star status.

The Royal & Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple achieves a 3 star status and the remaining part of the building is purchased for future expansion.

Peter Brend Jnr. joins the group at Saunton Sands Hotel, Nr. Braunton.

Richard Brend Jnr. joins the group at the Royal and Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple.

1996 
The Barnstaple Hotel has a new outdoor pool and gym built; the Health Club is also refurbished.

62 the Bank is opened on the site of the old Woolwich Building society.

The Carlyon Bay Hotel's outdoor pool and surrounding areas are refurbished.

The Devon Hotel has building work on the new Regency Suite and a refurbishment of the main hotel, with the creation of Carriages Brassiere, which opened in the May.

1997 
The Victoria Hotel restaurant has a complete refurbishment including air conditioning; the restaurant is renamed ‘The Jubilee’.

Staff accommodation is completely refurbished at The Victoria Hotel and staff housekeeper is employed.

1998 
The Belmont Hotel restaurant is refurbished and air conditioning is installed.

1999 
The Imperial Hotel, Barnstaple, is purchased from the regal group and extensive refurbishment begins.

The Imperial Hotel gains its 4 star status.

2000 
The Carlyon Bay Hotel gets a new kitchen.

The Barnstaple Hotel has a refurbishment of all 60 bedrooms. Sticklepath filling station is purchased.

2001 
The Royal Hotel is refurbished and air conditioning is installed in the Restaurant. 

2002
The Royal and Fortescue Hotel public areas and kitchen get refurbished. Sands Café Bar opens on the beach at Saunton. 

2003 
The Park Hotels function and restaurant suite and all public areas are refurbished.

The Victoria Hotel Sun Lounge is redeveloped.

2004 
Richard Brend Jnr, Justin Brend and Peter Brend Jnr are made Directors of the Company.

2005 
The Victoria Hotel celebrates its 100 years' anniversary.

Taw Garages moves to its new premises in Victoria Road in December 2005. The Hotel Group wins a ROSPA Health and Safety award for occupational safety.


Brend Group Head office moves to its newly refurbished offices next to The Park Hotel.

2006
Exeter Milkmaid restaurant is sold. Brend Group achieves the sustainable tourism award from Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI).

2007 
The Carlyon Bay Hotel opens a new Spa, complete with steam room, sauna, therapy pool, gym and hot stone beds.

2008 
The Carlyon Bay Hotel opens new Taste Brasserie and also opens its new Churchill Conference Suite. The Victoria Hotel installs a new treatment room and Spa.

2009 
Brend Group Fabric Design Workshop opens at The Park Hotel.

Royal and Fortescue Hotel has a new passenger lift installed. Nicola Brend joins the company as the Groups Creative Director and Marketing Manager after 15 years working in Advertising and Marketing.

2010 
Mr Richard Brend Jnr becomes managing Director of Taw Garages

Mr Matthew Brend takes on The Imperial Hotel as resident Director and becomes a Company Director a year later. 

Rezlynx On-line Booking System, is completed and links all our hotels and the central reservations department at our head office.

2011 
Peter Brend Jnr, appointed to oversee The Devon Hotel as well as Saunton Sands Hotel

Hannah Brend takes on the role of Marketing and Design for The Royal Duchy Hotel after several years at Saunton Sands Hotel. The Barnstaple Hotel has solar panels installed.

2012 
The Royal Duchy Hotel has its foyer refurbished.

Saunton Sands Hotel adds new beauty treatment rooms to complement its existing Spa facilities.

2013 
Carlyon Bay Hotel wins the prestigious Conde Nast Johansens award for the best family friendly hotel.

As part of the company’s commitment to energy and environmental conservation a new Biomass boiler is installed at the Saunton Sands Hotel, along with other initiatives including solar panels to reduce energy costs.

Matthew Brend appointed to oversee The Royal & Fortescue Hotel & 62 The Bank

2014
The Park Hotel has its Riverside Suite refurbished (now The Park Suite).

The Devon Hotel starts its new 20 bedroom refurbishment.

The Saunton Hotel begins the complete refurbishment of the Restaurant, Terrace Lounge and Saunton Suite.

The Royal Duchy Hotel refurbishes The Pendennis Restaurant

The Carlyon Bay Hotel's Bay View Restaurant is stunningly refurbished and the The Spa Bar is added as a new more informal dining area.

Mr. Mark Brend is appointed as Director of Taw Garages

Taw Garages brings Citroen to Barnstaple, creating Taw Citroen adjacent to Taw Ford.

Matthew Brend takes over as resident Director at The Carlyon Bay Hotel and The Carlyon Bay Golf Club.

2015
The Brend Training Academy is launched by Mr Peter Brend Snr & fellow Directors with Academy Principle Andrew Mosedale and partners HIT Training.

The Carlyon Bay Hotel's Carlyon Suite & Clubhouse is completely refurbished and extended to offer a spectacular venue for luncheons, private functions, evening wedding receptions or any other special occasions.

The Saunton Suite's refurbishment is completed at The Saunton Sands Hotel, now known as The Gallery.

The Devon Hotel sees the completion of the £1.5 million investment 20 new high tech, luxury Executive Rooms with a fitness suite & electric car charging facility. Every room is now equipped with air conditioning, HD TV and full Sky & Sports package with free Wifi throughout.  

The White Room by Chef Stuart White is created, the new relaxed dining option at the prestigious Victoria Hotel in Sidmouth.

Brend Hotels is awarded Hotel Group of the Year 2015-2016 at the prestigious AA Hospitality Awards in October at a glittering ceremony at Grosvenor House in London.

The Terrace Lounge at The Imperial Hotel in Barnstaple is completely refurbished to reveal a stylish, sumptuous room which make it a perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee, a light lunch, Devonshire cream tea or an after-dinner coffee or liqueur.

The Royal & Fortescue's foyer is elegantly refurbished to create a brighter, more modern feeling whilst retaining its classic charm.

Saunton Sands Hotel wins award for 'Best Hotel View' at the Best Loved Awards, held at the prestigious Rudding Park Hotel, Harrogate.

Project Park Hotel commences, with the transfer of our Head Office to new premises set over two floors in an industrial style setting.

2016
The first annual Brend Training Academy chef competition takes place at The Saunton Sands, with several young chefs taking part from across the group.

Major works on a new, vibrant cocktail bar attached to 62 The Bank at the Royal & Fortescue Hotel begin. Work was completed in 7 weeks & soon after Bar 62 opened, our new unique cocktail bar in the heart of Barnstaple.

Brend Hotels scoop another prestigious national award, this time the overall 'Family Business Of The Year' awarded by the Family Business Union.

After a 2 million pound investment, The Park Hotel unveils it's brand new facilities including a modern lift, 10 state of the art bedrooms, 2 of which are fully accessible for disabled guests, high speed WiFi, electronic check in, Tesla electronic charge point, landscaped gardens and the all new Seasons Bar & Brasserie.

Brend Hotels win again at the Best Loved Awards, this time The Carlyon Bay Hotel winning Best Family Hotel.

2017
Foundation works commence at The Royal Duchy Hotel, Falmouth ready for further developments including the addition of Deluxe Sea Facing bedrooms

The Barnstaple Hotel Leisure Club's changing facilities are overhauled and brought up to the highest of standards, with modern fixtures & fittings.

Max Brend is promoted from Group Fire Officer to Group Health & Safety Officer.

Corridors at The Carlyon Bay are re-decorated including new bespoke carpet, art work & paint, marking the end of a busy winter which saw over 20 bedrooms refurbished.

The Regency Suite at The Devon Hotel undergoes a full refurbishment with all new furniture, soft tones & stylish fittings.

A new 'Horizon' at The Belmont Hotel, with the addition of a relaxed dining option with panoramic sea views, fine dining menu & the ever quality Belmont hospitality.

'The Penthouse' at The Saunton Sands opens, a new open-plan 8 person apartment with award-winning sea views and ultra-luxe decor.

The Park Hotel recieves 4 star status.

The Brend Hotels' Training Academy celebrate their first Hotel Management Foundation Degree students graduating with a ceremony at Saunton Sands Hotel.
