A royal visit from the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall!

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall have been in the West Country this week and on Thursday the royal couple paid a visit to Barnstaple which is also the home town of Brend Hotels.

After travelling up from Cornwall, HRH Charles and Camilla arrived at Barnstaple's Pannier Market as part of their annual summer trip to the region. Hundreds of well wishers turned out to greet the Duke and Duchess who were officially welcomed to Barnstaple by the town's Mayor Cllr Julie Hunt.

Once inside the Pannier Market their Royal Hignesses were guided around by town centre manager Hannah Harrington alongside Lady Arran and the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon.

Charles and Camilla separated to visit stallholders on either side of the historic building. The town's officials had ensured that the market was looking at its resplendent best with Union Flag bunting everywhere to be seen.

The Duchess stopped at many of the stalls but was particularly taken with a fine display of hats. Camilla is reported to have bought one to take with her along with a Devon pasty! Prince Charles took an interest in North Devon firm Boom Kitchen Curry kits but chose not to take one back with him to Clarence House.

The Mayor of Barnstaple, Cllr Julie Hunt, told the North Devon Gazette:

“They overran for about 20 minutes, and quite honestly I think they could have spent the whole day here,” she said. “It was absolutely lovely”.

Local singer/songwriter Yazzy led a choir of local schoolchildren in a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' for the Duchess who celebrated her 70th birthday on Monday. She was presented with a birthday cake by local firm Mrs Smudgers Kitchen.
