Fascinating History
If the fabulous food and buzzing atmosphere is not enough, then you will be blown away by the ornate plasterwork ceiling! The building dates back to 1620 when it was a merchants’ house and in more recent times this exceptional building hosted a high street bank, hence the namesake! Four Biblical scenes are depicted amongst the intricate detail of the plasterwork, which also bears the arms of the company of Spanish merchants who would have commissioned the piece and the coat of arms for the borough of Barnstaple.
