Brend Hotels

The original founders of The Brend Group

Mr and Mrs Percy Brend, prior to Brend Hotels being formed, had several years experience in the meat, hotel and property business, having started out with their first butchers shop in Butchers Row Barnstaple and later a motel in Exeter.

Mr Brend bought several of the original group hotels and Mrs Brend re-fitted them and was responsible for the hotel and bedrooms’ decor.

Richard Brend Snr directed 22 retail meat outlets throughout Devon and went on to become MD of the groups’ motor division and director of Brend Hotels.

John Brend and Peter Brend, both group directors, operated all the hotels as they were purchased and installed the Brend ethos while also making the necessary physical changes to bring the hotels to the high standards they are today. They also introduced the Brend Academy, group green teams, group health and safety teams, Brend Tours, the companies own marketing and creative department and an in-house interior design and fabric department.

Today, many family members have joined the business and have taken up various responsibilities across the group which now employs 1300 people.


Percy Brend opens a butchers in Butchers Row, Barnstaple.


Mr & Mrs Percy Brend purchase The Exeter Motel.


The Fryary Restaurant in Barnstaple is opened and The Royal Hotel in Bideford is purchased. This marked the forming of the company Percy R Brend & Sons (Hoteliers).


Taw Garages in Barnstaple is purchased.


The North Devon Motel, Barnstaple is opened.


The Royal & Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple is purchased from Watney Mann.


The North Devon Leisure Centre Bar & Cafeteria is opened.


The Devon Motel, Matford Exeter, is purchased from Grand Metropolitan Hotels. Five restaurants are purchased from the Milk Marketing Board.


The Royal Duchy Hotel, Falmouth, is purchased.

Saunton Sands Hotel, Saunton, is purchased after several years of negotiation, Mr Percy Brend achieves one of his ambitions.


The Victoria Hotel, Sidmouth is purchased.


Brend Tours is launched.


The Carlyon Bay Hotel & Golf Course is purchased.


A new Petrol Service Station is opened.

The Carlyon Bay Hotel & Golf Course achieves 4-star status.


The Belmont Hotel, Sidmouth is purchased.


Saunton Sands Hotel takes over Saunton Beach Villas.

The Belmont Hotel achieves 4-star status.

The North Devon Motel is extended by purchasing Drake and Fortescue Houses.


The Carlyon Bay Hotel is awarded Egon Ronay ‘Family Hotel of the Year 1989’.

The Royal Hotel, Bideford, is refurbished.

The North Devon Motel is refurbished and renamed as The Park Hotel.

Brend Group wins RAC ‘Credit to the Industry’ award.


The Royal & Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple, is refurbished.

Saunton Sands Hotel is awarded Egon Ronay ‘Family Hotel of the Year 1991’.


The Barnstaple Motel is purchased and refurbished, also the name is changed to The Barnstaple Hotel.


‘Investors in People’ status is gained by the Brend Hotel Group.

The Royal Duchy Hotel celebrates its 100 year anniversary.


The Royal Duchy Hotel, Falmouth achieves 4-star status.

The remaining part of the building at The Royal & Fortescue Hotel is purchased for future expansion.


The Barnstaple Hotel opens a new outdoor pool and a gym is built; the Leisure Club is also refurbished.

62 the Bank is opened on the site of the old Woolwich Building Society.

The Carlyon Bay Hotel’s outdoor pool and surrounding areas are refurbished.

The Devon Hotel is refurbished and ‘Carriages Brassiere’ is created.


The Victoria Hotel restaurant has a complete refurbishment; the restaurant is renamed ‘The Jubilee’.

Staff accommodation is completely refurbished at The Victoria Hotel also.


The Belmont Hotel Restaurant is refurbished.


The Imperial Hotel, Barnstaple, is purchased from the Regal Group and extensive refurbishment begins.

The Imperial Hotel gains 4-star status.


The Carlyon Bay Hotel gets a new kitchen.

Sticklepath filling station is purchased.


The Royal Hotel is refurbished.

‘Sands on the Beach’ a new cafe & bar, opens at Saunton.


The Park Hotel’s function and restaurant suite and all public areas are refurbished.

As part of the company’s commitment to energy and environmental conservation, a new Biomass boiler is installed at the Saunton Sands Hotel, along with other initiatives including solar panels to reduce energy costs.


The Park Hotel’s Riverside Suite is refurbished, now known as The Park Suite.

The Devon Hotel starts building 20 new bedrooms.
