Our 2020 in 600 words
From what can only be described as a whirlwind year it’s safe to say everyone has felt the lowest of lows during 2020. With 2 meter distancing, zoom calls, face masks, and virtual hugs all part of our new reality, we focused on bringing peace and escapism to guests looking for a break from everyday life. Although safety is, as always, our utmost priority, we wanted to show guests that you can still get that holiday feeling without just looking back through your Instagram feed.
What started out like many other years, full of hope and determination to make 2020 ‘our’ year, and although it isn’t one of our favorites we’ve learned a lot and feel we’ve made the best of what the world has thrown at us. Whilst we know 2020 has been extremely tough for so many, we’ve had some incredible highs along the way. Let’s take a look back and remind ourselves of all the positives.
Donating to food banks
On the 20th March, Brend Hotels took the difficult decision to shut all 11 hotels across Devon and Cornwall and our team undertook the huge task of shutting down our hotels. Our Directors made it a priority that our team distribute as much food and drink as possible across Devon & Cornwall. Our teams donated over £2000 worth of food to local charities and food banks along with donating all Mother’s Day Gifts to local care homes.
Giving back to our key workers
After seeing the extreme lengths and hard work that so many key workers were undergoing just to keep everyone safe was something that we were truly proud of and couldn’t commend enough. As our way to give back to those incredible people, The Barnstaple & Devon Hotel remained open to the NHS offering free accommodation to key workers - for many it was a home away from home when they couldn’t see their own family or loved ones.
National Family Business Day
With 2020 teaching us that family is everything, it felt only right to celebrate National Family Business Day on 23rd September. From Mr & Mrs. Percy Brend starting out in 1955 to their great-grandchildren still following in their footsteps over 65 years later, Brend Hotels still share the same core values as they did when it all began. We shared a snippet of history on our website, which is still available to read here.
Eat Out To Help Out
We don’t think there were many people who didn’t claim an ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ discount and who can blame you? With an incredible 50% saving, it really was a deal you didn’t want to miss. Our hotels opened their doors to more people than we could ever imagine, with most restaurants fully booked every Monday - Wednesday throughout the scheme.
The most important thing that 2020 has taught us is to be grateful. We feel so lucky to have survived this year as a business, and although we’re still navigating our way through a whole new world and adjusting our business accordingly, we remain extremely grateful and thankful for all of our incredible customers' support and patience during this crazy year. Your support means the world to us and we can’t thank you enough!
Looking ahead, we’re crossing all of our fingers and toes that 2021 really will be ‘our’ year, and plan to make it better than ever - and of course, continuing to embrace the ‘new normal’.
Lastly, we wish you and yours a very happy and prosperous new year. We hope we are fortunate enough to welcome you in the new year for the luxury escape you deserve, but in the meantime please stay safe and join us in continuing to fight this Global pandemic.
